When one thinks of all the wonderful delights that Amritsar hs to offer, we can’t help but think of Kesar Da Dhaba and everything that makes us want to go back to this spot over and over again. Over a hundred years old, this eatery still retains its charm and people from all over the country flock to this spot just to get a taste of all that they have to offer. Even to this day, they have a limited menu with some of the best thalis in Amritsar. Having spent considerable time reading Kesar Da Dhaba’s reviews, we decided to take a little road trip to this pot to find out more.
Even though Kesar Da Dhaba is located in the narrow lanes of Chowk Passian, finding this dhaba won’t be too tough a task given that everyone you meet will be able to help you with directions. To this day, Kesar Da Dhaba looks like a small humble eatery that still strives to serve the heartiest dishes you’ll find in all the land, even though it is highly acclaimed and is famous. One of the best dhabas in Amritsar, Kesar Da Dhaba was started by Lala Kesar Mal and his wife in 1916. It may be surprising, but Amritsar was not the original location of the eatery. The couple had first set up the dhaba in Sheikhupura, near Lahore where they sold dal and roti. It was after partition in 1947 that they shifted base to Amritsar and worked their way up to create a fan following. Their most selling dish is the Kali Dal or Dal Makhani which is slow cooked in a copper vessel overnight for almost 12 hours. They start preparing the dal at 4 pm and cook it until the next day at 4 am is in the morning before opening their shutters. They even add a special ghee fry to the dal made with onions and fresh green chilies.
That’s not all. Kesar Da Dhaba is also known for its Parantha Thali. In fact, it is so good, we would even go as far as to say that it truly deserves a spot in our list of the best thalis in Amritsar. It has their iconic Kali Dal, Chholey, Raita, Salad, Pickle and piping hot paranthas. You can pick from plain, aloo and gobhi paranthas for this one and you get two, butter-laden discs of heaven. You’ve got to have a bite of this to truly understand why we would say that it’s one of the best thalis in Amritsar.
Speaking of thalis, Kesar Da Dhaba also has a Chapati Thali and a Chapati ChopriThali. The only difference is that the latter has even more desi ghee than usual! For those who are not too fond of paranthas (like those people even exist), this is the perfect treat.
Also on their menu are Laccha Paranthas that will win your heart in an instant. They’re made of maida, are stuffed, have many layers and are absolutely what you need on a cold wintery evening to warm you up. These paranthas are served with their special dal. They’re served hot from the tandoor and smeared with more butter. We bet you won’t be able to stop at just one!
